The Bus Cat

Bus PussThey say cats are independent but it is rare to find one so independent that it deserves its own bus pass. But that’s exactly what adventurous moggy Casper from Plymouth, England does. The 12 year old kitty explorer regularly hops on the number 3 bus for a spot of local sightseeing fun. Furs please!

Is Your Cat Left-Handed?

Hmm... Which one is my writing hand?

Ever wondered why little Tiddles never gives you a high five?  Perhaps its because you’re putting out the wrong hand.

Psychologists from Queen’s University in Belfast have discovered that much like people, cats can be either right or left handed.  The feline-curious researchers set cats different tasks including retrieving tuna from jars too small for their heads, pawing at a toy mouse suspended from a string or watching which hand they write with (okay I made that one up).  Different sexes of cats tended to favour different paws, with females favouring the right paw and males favouring the left.

Two conclusions can be reached from these findings:

  1. Cats can be either right or left pawed.
  2. Scientists have too much time on their hands.

The Bathroom that Meowed

The Cat Felt FlushThere was a story in the news this week about a cat called Francine who very nearly watched one of her nine lives go down the plughole.  Owner Liezel Meyer had arranged for a plumber to fix a leaky pipe in her bathroom.  However once he left, she couldn’t find her persian kitty Francine anywhere.

It wasn’t until she heard a muffled meowing sound coming from her bathroom wall that she figured out what had happened.  The plumber had taken tiles off around the bath to get to the pipes and had then replastered the wall.  However, unbeknownst to him, Francine’s curiosity had led her to explore the space behind the bath.

Meyer immediately smashed through the bath casing to rescue her frightened feline friend.  Curiosity may not have killed the cat this time, but it surely qualifies as attempted murder.

I’m not sure how Francine the cat celebrated being freed.  All I know is she’d had enough of getting plastered.

You’ve Got Male

Cat Man Do!Statistically, it is almost impossible for a male tortoiseshell cat to be born.  This is because male cats have only one X chromosome in their DNA, and since the X chromosome inherits the cat’s colour, it means it is impossible for them to inherit multiple colours (as is the case with tortoiseshell cats).

So vet Karen Horne was amazed when a litter of tortoiseshell kittens was brought into her surgery in Harpenden, Herts by local charity Cat and Kitten Rescue and one of them was male.

So amazed was Horne that she decided to adopt the kitten and has named him Eddie after cross-dressing comedian Eddie Izzard as she considers her kitty to be a male cat in female clothing!

Cat-a-Wall

016wallcatFire fighters in South Wales were called out when a student, returning home from a night at the local pub, observed a cat ’stuck’ in a wall inside an Ironmongers.  Believing he was acting in the cat’s best interest, he called the fire brigade.

The fire crew responded to the call and were seconds away from breaking down the door to rescue the wall-bound kitty when, luckily for all parties involved, a neighbour intercepted them with an explanation.

It seems that the cat had an unusual little cubby hole in a wall where she nestles in to relax at night.

When owner, ironmonger and man-with-hole-in-wall Clive Hallifax learned what had happened, he felt lucky his shop’s door was not broken down by well-meaning firemen.  He revealed that he had owned the cat, named Catti, for over a year, having found her as a stray.  Catti had walked through the door one day and never left.  Catti stays in the shop at night to guard it and catch mice.

Perhaps a sign explaining that a Guard Cat is on duty might prevent this happening again?
