The Amazing Journey of Otis

But the cat came back the very next year...If proof was needed about the cat’s ability to survive against the odds, Otis the Cat is it.  Last July, while visiting Fair Haven, Vermont, USA a full 230 miles from her home, Kathryn Sternfels’ cat Otis scampered from her car into the woods (possibly in search of forest tuna).

Despite numerous attempts to call him back, Otis was nowhere to be seen.  Feeling guilty and worried, Sternfels eventually had no option but to leave.  However, she would not give up on her family cat and returned several times in an effort to track him down, putting up wanted posters and even offering a tasty $100 reward.

Sadly, even the promise of dollars failed to return any leads.  It wasn’t until a full year later, August this year, that the story progressed.  Sternfels’ eagle-eyed sister had discovered a local Vermonter by the name of Wilma had been feeding Otis and keeping an eye open for him.  Apparently he had been living in a nearby underground duct.  It is not known whether he ever found the elusive tuna of the forest.

An excited Sternfels raced to Fair Haven to be reunited with the wandering Otis who, she said, now looked a little more mature and fitter and had a slightly “skunklike” aroma.  I feel a bathtime coming on.
